ICOM is an international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) (http://www.icomos.org/)

ICOMOS works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. It is the only global non-government organisation of this kind, which is dedicated to promoting the application of theory, methodology, and scientific techniques to the conservation of the architectural and archaeological heritage. Its work is based on the principles enshrined in the 1964 International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites (the Venice Charter).

PIMA’s purpose and mission is to:

  • Develop communication links that bring together professionals and institutions in support of Pacific Islands Heritage management, including but not limited to publishing a regular newsletter and maintaining a website;
  • Enhance human resources through education and training;
  • Promote awareness of the local, regional and national cultural institutions in the Pacific about the safeguarding and preservation of Oceania’s heritage and heritage places;
  • Disseminate cultural heritage information amongst the local communities of the Pacific Islands region;
  • Develop and promote a code of ethics and standards in Pacific Islands heritage management;
  • Advise and work with governments and other agencies in matters of heritage management and policy;
  • Facilitate the protection and restitution of tangible and intangible cultural property.
